Dinner for one.

Simply put, cooking is good for the soul. For me, while I do adore the cookbooks that serve as decorations in my kitchen, cooking from them is something I envision doing rarely if at all. I approach cooking like I do painting. I mostly make it up as I go along and hope to God it works out and nothing burns.
When I got home this afternoon, it was storming, and I knew I wanted to eat. Most afternoons that's the story, but this afternoon I had a well stocked fridge and creativity.

I started with rendering bacon, like most good meals start. A generous splash of heavy cream and a little dollop of Dijon mustard later, a tangy cream sauce was born for brussel sprouts. I didn't know I liked creamed brussel sprouts, but they are wonderful indeed. 10 out of 10, would recommend.
Next up was a beautiful little steak I got on sale - cooked a little under, but with a beautiful sear and on point seasoning. Making sure the olive oil sings when you sprinkle water on it means the oil is hot enough for the steak to brown. Also, basting steak in butter is not just for restaurants. It makes even a $6 steak taste like a million bucks.
On this stormy afternoon in the city I love as much as (dare I say more than) Leslie Knope loves Pawnee, I made a meal that was just plain yummy after a lovely trip to what I have decided is my favorite grocery store.

And yes, dear readers, whoever you are, you bet I thought about Jesus while I reveled in shopping and cooking. He was especially on my mind in the store when I found cream cheese stuffed, bacon wrapped jalapenos and boiled peanuts.
Because friends, He listens like no other. To ever whisper of your heart. Even when your heart whispers about bacon wrapped jalapeno peppers like mine. Sometimes you don't even know that's what you need or what you're looking for, but you better believe He knows.
Summer is sweet, friends. But guess what - He is sweeter.
